“Without a doubt,” declared Kevin Hassett, director of the National Economic Council and one of Trump’s key commercial advisors, during a recent appearance on Fox News. The question? Would negotiations with Canada be reopened immediately? Spoiler alert: they most certainly will!
Digital Services Tax: A Power Play
Hassett detailed the discussions that took place during the G7 Summit in the scenic Kananaskis, Canada, between President Trump and Prime Minister Mark Carney. The hot topic? The Digital Services Tax that the European Union shamelessly imposed as a flouting of US sovereignty!
Trump made it crystal clear: “One of the things that the president requested was the withdrawal of the Digital Services Tax.” Initially, Canadian finance minister François-Philippe Champagne audaciously claimed that this overreaching tax would remain intact. But Trump’s determination prevailed!
In a bombshell announcement on social media, Trump declared the end of negotiations with Canada, putting them on notice regarding their insistence on this unjust tax – a brutal 3% on tech revenues exceeding $15 million.
“Obviously, they are copying the European Union, which has done the same and is currently in conversations with us,” said the billionaire from New York.
Warning Shots Fired
Trump’s words are not empty threats: as a direct reprisal, he announced unilateral tariffs on Canadian exports: “We will inform Canada of the tariff they will have to pay to do business with the US in a period of seven days.” This was described by Trump as “a direct and flagrant attack against our country.”
And guess what? The threats worked! Canada has reversed course and will withdraw the tax, reopening the crucial door to trade negotiations. “They have studied it, they have agreed, and that means we can resume negotiations” said Hassett, basking in the victory for American commerce.
Champagne himself acknowledged, “The termination of the Digital Services Tax will allow vital progress in the negotiations of a new economic and security relationship with the US.” But hold on, can we trust Ottawa to keep its promises?
A Message to the European Union
The Canadian tax development sends a critical warning to the European Union: you’re next! As discussions with Trump loom large, the infamous ‘Google Tax’ remains a thorny issue that could ignite a wildfire of conflict.
But there’s more on Trump’s shopping list: he demands that the VAT imposed on American cars be slashed and that the EU cuts back on agricultural subsidies. It’s time for Europe to play fair, or face the consequences!
Let’s not forget April 2, dubbed the “Day of Liberation,” when Trump threatened duties that sent shivers down global markets. Although a temporary, 90-day moratorium was granted, the clock is ticking down to July 9, and the EU better scramble for a deal!
Trump’s admiration for NATO members who are stepping up defense spending is well-documented, yet his ire toward the EU remains palpable. “The European Union was created to screw the US,” he famously quipped. As deadlines approach, we can only anticipate how the world will respond to America’s unwavering demands!
