The European Union’s Disgraceful Silence on Gaza: Where’s the Action?

As the mountains of bodies in Gaza continue to rise, one has to ask: What is holding the European Union back? Why has it taken so long for these bureaucratic elites to respond? Their indecisiveness and lack of action are calling out to the heavens.

Months have passed with foreign ministers engaging in endless meetings, yet not a single meaningful resolution has surfaced. Kaja Kallas, supposedly the high representative for foreign affairs, walked out empty-handed and unfazed. It’s only under the relentless pressure of public outrage that the EU issued a weak warning to Israel: a mere partial suspension from a scientific program. This is a classic case of too little, too late!

Europe’s Weakness Exposed: A Shocking Inaction

How is it possible that we still haven’t lifted a finger to prevent the ethnic cleansing occurring under a regime that claims to share our so-called democratic values? There’s a distinct failure in leadership here, mirrored by Germany’s haunting past.

Germany is stumbling over its own history, unable to stand firm against one of the worst atrocities of our time because it’s afraid to challenge Israel, the very nation it considers a partner. It’s a national disgrace that a country remembered for the extermination of six million Jews cannot speak up against current horrors.

But let’s not just point fingers at Germany. Eastern European nations contribute to this shameful narrative as well. Obsessed with distancing themselves from Russia, they fear that opposing Israel might open another front. Others, acting like American or Russian puppets, vote in favor of their benefactors rather than standing up for the European values we supposedly uphold.

Rise of Populism: The EU’s Internal Crisis

From Scandinavia to Italy, the wave of far-right populism sweeping across Europe indicates a disturbing trend. Nearly half of the EU governments are influenced by these extreme parties, which cleverly choose to undermine the Union from the inside. They cherish the benefits of EU membership while refusing to endorse its principles.

Until recently, we felt somewhat secure in the belief that the rise of radical right parties in France and Germany wouldn’t lead to immediate doom. However, the grim reality is unfolding: LGBT rights are being trampled, inhumane measures against immigrants are the norm, and governments are increasingly illiberal. We are witnessing the disintegration of the EU’s cohesion right before our eyes while Brussels sits idly by, incapable of responding to even simple international trade challenges, like the tariffs imposed by Trump.

Do We Share the Same Values?

The looming question is: Do we share the same values? The EU has always been a union of convenience, but we are now forced to confront an uncomfortable truth: the façade is collapsing, and these marriages of convenience are showing cracks that threaten to unravel our unity.

Brussels’s shameful stance on Gaza is more than just a credibility blow—it’s a harbinger of doom for a once-promising project that could very well lose its significance if it doesn’t find its spine.
