Russia Initiates Mass Production of Nuclear Shelters Amid Escalating Tensions in Ukraine

Russia begins mass manufacturing nuclear shelters to protect itself from radiation after the escalation of the war in Ukraine

The All-Russian Research Institute for Civil Defense and Emergencies has announced that Russia has begun mass production of mobile bomb shelters called KUB-M. Scientists at this center have developed a modular mobile shelter designed to protect against the light radiation of a nuclear explosion and the radioactive contamination of the area.

«KUB-M provides protection for 48 hours against a shock wave of air and light radiation from a nuclear explosion; penetrating radiation and radioactive contamination of the area; high explosive and fragmentation effects of conventional weapons; falling debris from building structures; hazardous chemicals; fires,” according to the media RIA Novosti and Meduza.

The organization added in a statement that the shelter “provides protection to people against a variety of threats, including natural disasters and man-made incidents. Its production began in the city of Dzerzhinsk, Nizhny Novgorod region, on November 18.

According to the Institute, the “KUB-M” has the appearance of a reinforced maritime container and is made up of two modules: a room for 54 people and a technical block. And if necessary, more modules can be added. Likewise, they specified that both production, transportation and installation cost half of what it would cost to build a permanent shelter. And its production and installation takes only three months.

In his statement, The institute did not link the production of the shelters with the tense situation that is being experienced in recent days with the announcement of the United States’ decision to authorize Ukraine to use long-range missiles. A move that means Ukraine could hit targets that are a maximum of 300 kilometers away. For this, they would use ATACMS, a US Army Tactical Missile system.

This situation has set off all the alarms for the Kremlin, which has responded by changing its nuclear doctrine, expanding the types and origins of the threats to which it could respond with this type of weaponry.
